Initially planned from 1 January 2023, this measure had already been postponed to 1 April.

"We consider that the time is not the right for the measure to enter into force," said the office of Olivia Grégoire, minister delegate for Trade, in the Sunday edition of Le Parisien, following information published in Midi Libre.

"We have feedback from the field, we discuss with consumer associations, with large retailers, who tell us that, in the face of inflation, many French people want to check the accuracy of the amount of shopping they do," said the firm.

According to Bercy, a new date should be announced early next week.

Two dates are under discussion, says Le Parisien, August 1 and September 1. "Our preference is August 1," said Olivia Grégoire's ministry quoted by the daily, because "in September it is the time of back-to-school shopping, it may be even more disturbing."

The "anti-waste and circular economy" law, voted in 2020, planned to put an end to the printing of receipts at the end of a commercial transaction, unless explicitly requested by the customer, with the aim of reducing waste production.

But since this law, high inflation, particularly on prices in supermarkets, has made it more frequent for consumers to consult the receipt.
