"The expectation that Western sanctions would lead to a financial or currency crisis in Russia was too optimistic. Russia's economy has been under sanctions since 2014. They prefer macroeconomic stability over growth, and are very disciplined when it comes to the budget," the economist said.

According to Yavorchik, Russia has a "competent team of technocrats" who managed to stabilize the economy after the sanctions, RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Russian economy is beginning to develop according to a new model. He recalled that the country was able to compensate for the closure of Western markets for it and expanded trade contacts with the states of fast-growing regions of the world.
