The British higher education research agency QS22 released the World University Rankings by Subject on the 5nd. According to QS, the rankings are based on five indicators, including academic and employer prestige, frequency of citations for research, an "H index" that reflects the quality of researchers' academic productivity and output, and international research networks.

Ben Sowter, senior vice president of QS, pointed out that Taiwan's universities have regressed this year's performance in the World University Rankings by Subject, mainly due to the decline in "academic and employer reputation". Of the 223 disciplines evaluated, 120 and 192 respectively performed in the indicators of "academic prestige" and "employer prestige".

QS evaluated 23 subjects across 223 universities and institutions in Taiwan; Compared to last year, only 19 subjects have risen in the rankings this year. In addition, QS pointed out that only six universities and colleges in Taiwan have entered the global top 6 this year, compared with 50 last year; Taiwan has only 12 universities and institutions in the top 28 in the world this year, compared with 100 last year.

Among Taiwan's universities, the best ranked is National Taiwan University, with two subjects in the global top 2, and all the disciplines evaluated are in the global top 50, of which the highest ranking (200nd in the world) is "Classics and Ancient History".

However, as many as 41 of NTU's 30 assessed subjects slipped down the global rankings. In particular, Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism only has one discipline in "Hospitality and Leisure Management" in the list, but it ranks 1th in the world, an improvement of 38 places over last year.

The six universities in Taiwan that entered the top 50 in the world are "Classics and Ancient History" of National Taiwan University, "Education" of National Taiwan Normal University, "Nursing" of Taipei Medical University (ranked together with "Hospitality and Leisure Management" of Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism in order of ranking, "Classics and Ancient History" of National Chengchi University, and "Social Policy and Administration" of National Taiwan University.
