"We have predominantly women who come to us, and maybe that's because they find it easier to ask for help," says Kristina Karlsson.

Last year, Gnesta municipality received 33 cases of debt restructuring, compared with the year before when that figure was 18.

'Turmoil around economy'

In Eskilstuna, the municipality has also seen an increase and there they see above all that rising prices are a factor in why more and more people need help.

"Now people are getting in touch because of the current situation. There's a turmoil around the economy and it becomes so palpable only when you go shopping. Those who previously did not have to worry do so now, says Elisabeth Martinius Nilsson, who is a budget and debt adviser in Eskilstuna municipality.
