Earlier this week, we talked about the underground work to map the Per Geijer ore outside Kiruna that contains apatite-rich iron ore as well as Europe's largest known deposit of rare earth elements.

But LKAB fears that it will take a long time before there will be a mine on the site.

Recently, the European Commission presented a legal act stressing the importance of more extraction of these minerals within the EU. It is a question of reducing dependence on China in particular.

Speed up the process

It should also be faster to get a permit. A strategically designated project shall take a maximum of 24 months to be processed by the respective authorities of the Member States.

Part of the proposal is that the nations should establish authorities that will be able to process the entire permit application - so-called one-shop-stops.

But how exactly this should work in Sweden, LKAB questions?

"It's a step in the right direction, but we think it's too little. More is needed," says Anders Lindberg, Press Officer at LKAB.

In the clip, he explains more about what is needed.
