Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune informed Emmanuel Macron of the return of the Algerian ambassador to France in the coming days during a telephone interview, the Elysee announced Friday (March 24th) in a statement.

"The two heads of state exchanged views on the conditions of departure from Tunisia and arrival in France, with the support of our consular services in Tunisia, of a Franco-Algerian national, on February 6," said the Elysee. "This exchange helped to remove misunderstandings."

Algeria last month recalled its ambassador to France for consultation, blaming Paris for pressuring Tunisian authorities to allow Amira Bouraoui, a French-Algerian journalist and human rights activist, to leave for France instead of extraditing her to Algeria.

"Strengthening communication channels"

Arrested during major anti-government protests in Algeria in 2019 and released the following year, Amira Bouraoui entered Tunisian territory illegally by escaping Algerian judicial scrutiny.

Algeria accused diplomats of carrying out "clandestine and illegal exfiltration".

The two heads of state "agreed to strengthen the channels of communication between the administrations concerned to avoid the recurrence of this type of regrettable misunderstanding," said the Elysee.

"President Abdelmadjid Tebboune informed the head of state of the return to France of the Algerian ambassador in the coming days."
