"The conditions in which freedom of speech and assembly are exercised in France in the context of the social protest movement against the pension reform are worrying," Mijatović said.

In her opinion, violence by demonstrators cannot justify the excessive use of force by the French police.

"There have been violent incidents, some of which have targeted law enforcement. But sporadic acts of violence by some demonstrators... cannot serve as an excuse for the excessive use of force by agents (the police)," the commissioner stressed.
