Pain, fear and later sex onset may be three explanations for why more young people choose condoms as contraception. This is the opinion of Tanja Tydén at Uppsala University Hospital, who has met with many young people to investigate the issue of contraceptive use.

"And then I think the consent law may have made more people show concern for each other and then choose to be more careful," she says.

From unsightly to adult

RFSU's annual survey provides another explanation: Changed attitude.

Fewer and fewer people see the condom as something unsexy, unsafe or unsightly. Instead, more and more young people are choosing to associate condom use with qualities such as responsible, adult and confident.
