A young zebra girl who escaped from a zoo has wandered for hours through the busy streets of South Korea's capital before emergency workers tranquilized the animal and took it back to a zoo.

The zebra, a male named Sero who was born at the zoo in 2021, is doing well and is being examined by a team of veterinarians, according to Choi Ye-ra, an official at Seoul Children's Park.

The zoo is investigating how the animal managed to escape. Although it has not been confirmed, several Korean media claim that the animal partially destroyed the wooden fence that surrounded its corral before escaping.

Social media has been filled with videos of the zebra jogging past lines of cars waiting at a green light, and galloping down a street lined with commercial buildings as pedestrians stopped.

Police and emergency services managed to corner the zebra as it entered a narrow alley between houses and shot it with tranquilizers, ending its three-hour freedom.

There is no information of injuries or material damage caused.
