The Government is negotiating with Morocco the transfer of the management of the airspace of Western Sahara, as acknowledged by the Executive in a parliamentary response. "Talks with Morocco in this area have begun," La Moncloa said in writing in response to questions from Canarian Senator Fernando Clavijo.

The talks with Morocco in this regard "are limited to the management of airspace and coordination between both parties in order to achieve greater security in connections and technical cooperation," says the Government.

According to the Government, the negotiation is "in compliance with point 7 of the Joint Declaration of April 7", known as the roadmap of the new relationship between Spain and Morocco agreed in 2022. Point 7 states verbatim that "talks on airspace management will be initiated".

For decades, the airspace of the Sahara has been managed from the Canary Islands, as established by the International Civil Aviation Organization of the UN.

In his question, Senator Clavijo has also been interested in whether this issue was addressed at the High Level Meeting (RAN) held between the governments of Spain and Morocco at the beginning of February in Rabat, an extreme that has not been answered by Moncloa.
