An international conference to discuss the management of saury resources, which continues to be severely underfished, began in Sapporo City for three days from 22 to 3.
The Japan is proposing to reduce the amount of fish that can be caught in the North Pacific to help restore stocks, and the focus is on whether countries can work together.

In addition to Japan, representatives from nine countries and regions, including Russia, China, and Taiwan, attended the international conference to discuss the management of saury stocks caught in the North Pacific, which began in Sapporo for three days from 22 June.

In the North Pacific, saury catches continue to be severe, and the meeting agreed to lower the catch cap for 3 and 9 by 2021% from 2022 to a total of more than 2020,40 tons.

However, the actual catch of the adult is more than 33,9 tons, which is well below the agreed 2000,33 tons.

For this reason, the Japan is proposing at this conference to further lower the cap on fish catches to promote the recovery of stocks, but China and other countries are expected to be cautious about introducing further fishing regulations, and the focus is on whether countries can cooperate with each other.

Prior to the meeting, Deputy Director-General of the Fisheries Agency, Miwako Taka*, who represents the Japan government, said, "I think some countries think that it will be difficult to immediately regulate the expanded fishery, but I would like to reach a consensus by taking strict measures to restore stocks."
