  • Interview Ramón Tamames: "It can be said that Spain is a nation of nations: a supernation"

As one of the most egregious economists and politicians in our country, Ramón Tamames (89) is one of the few voices that should be listened to very carefully. Regardless of whether he is the leader of the motion of censure against Pedro Sánchez from the ranks of Vox, Don Ramón is endorsed for seven decades as an analyst of the evolution of our country.

He was born into a wealthy family in which his father, Manuel, was a doctor of Medicine and Surgery as well as a professor of Anatomy, while his mother, Carmen Gómez, was dedicated to the care of their five children. The socio-political events of the time also made a dent in the Tamames-Gómez, since as our protagonist recalled in his biography More than a memoir, for years, every night they dined on garlic or lentil soups due to the rationing devised by the scientist Grande Covián. He suffered from anemia and was sent to Extremadura to be cured. There he learned about the countryside, the pasture and the slaughter.

From that childhood he was stuck as his paternal grandfather, Clemente, entertained his grandchildren by reading Don Quixote. That's where his passion for reading began. He was always a restless young man hungry to learn every day. But his fate was marked after the suicide of his mother, an absence present throughout the life of the former politician. Their father went out of his way for them and thanks to him they soaked up culture because at home he dedicated himself to painting, listening to music and reading.

He had an exquisite education in the baccalaureate of the French Lyceum in Madrid until obtaining a doctorate in Law (1958) and Economics (1964) at the university of the capital, knowledge that he expanded in the elitist London School of Economics. This has allowed him to be fluent in other languages such as English and French, speaks Italian and Portuguese and understands German. In 1968 he took out the chair of Economic Structure.

Another magical moment of his biography was the night he met Ava Gardner. Don Ramón's father was the personal physician of Luis Miguel Dominguín, who in the mid-50s maintained an affair with the protagonist of La condesa descalza. To be proud of his conquest, the right-hander invited Dr. Manuel Tamames and his three eldest sons, among whom was Ramón, to dinner. The star dazzled them with her beauty and passion for drinking. The revelry continued in the tablao Villa Rosa. The friendship between Dominguín and the Tamames was ironclad, to the point that the right-hander protected Don Ramón and other reds from the wrath of Franco, a close friend of the bullfighter.

In 1960 he found the fundamental pillar of his life, Carmen Prieto-Castro (witness today from the rostrum, of everything that happens in Congress), with whom he has had three children, Alicia, Moncho and Laura, and with whom he wrote Introduction to the Spanish Constitution (1980), since Don Ramón had been one of the signatories of the Magna Carta in 1978. The same year of his wedding he wrote Economic Structure of Spain, popularly known as El Tamames, since it is one of the most important references worldwide.

A member of the PCE, his student revolts and anti-Franco philosophy led to his imprisonment twice, in 1956 and 1976. One of the professional moments that I remember most pleasantly was when he served as first deputy mayor during the mandate of Enrique Tierno Galván.

Despite his advanced age his restless spirit remains unchanged. Being inactive is not part of their vocabulary. Among his hobbies have always highlighted swimming, climbing, trekking, literature and classical music, as well as being a member of Greenpeace or Amnesty International.
