A German minister visited Taiwan for the first time in 26 years and signed an agreement on cooperation in fields such as semiconductors and AI = artificial intelligence.

German Minister of Education and Research Starquatzinger visited Taiwan's National Science and Technology Commission on May 21 and held talks with Chief Cabinet Member Wu Zheng-chung.

After the meeting, Education and Research Minister Starkwatzinger said, "Taiwan and Germany share values such as democracy, transparency, openness and freedom, and have been cooperating and exchanging in the field of science and technology for many years.

Together with Mr. Wu, I witnessed the signing of the Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement by representatives of each other's contact organizations.

In an interview, Commissioner Wu clarified that the agreement calls for cooperation in priority areas such as semiconductors, AI, and hydrogen energy.

He then expressed his expectation that "if we can combine Taiwan's semiconductors with the German automobile industry, we will achieve win-win results."

Education and Research Minister Starkwatzinger, who is visiting Taiwan for the first time in 26 years as a German minister, will visit the Semiconductor Research Center and discuss cooperation in teaching Chinese to Germans with Minister of Education Ban Wen-chun during his stay until the 22nd.

Regarding the first visit by a German minister to Taiwan in 26 years, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin stated at a press conference on the 21st, "We firmly oppose the malicious acts of the German side," and expressed strong dissatisfaction and made it clear that they lodged a strict protest.

"We urge Germany to strictly adhere to the principle of 'One China' and immediately stop sending false signals to Taiwan independence forces and interfering in China's internal affairs in the name of Taiwan affairs," he said.
