The validity of driver's licenses, which were received by citizens in 2012 and 2013, has been extended by three years. This was stated by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia Vladimir Kolokoltsev during a speech with a report at an expanded meeting of the board of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"The validity of all Russian driver's licenses, which ended in 2022 or expires this year, has been extended for three years. This is done for the convenience of citizens and reducing the administrative burden," Kolokoltsev said.

As stated on the government information portal "Explain", this measure concerns about 5 million certificates. It is emphasized that we are talking about certificates that expire in the period from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2023.

Recall that in April 2022, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a corresponding resolution. The official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Irina Volk, indicated that the action of the "expired" VU will last automatically.

"The extension of the validity of driver's licenses will allow more than 5 million drivers in the next three years to continue to drive vehicles unhindered," she said.

At the same time, the prolongation is valid only on the territory of Russia and does not apply to international rights.

In addition, the press service of the traffic police of Moscow pointed to the conditions under which a citizen of the Russian Federation will have to change the driver's license without fail: when changing personal data, when there are medical restrictions on driving, if the VU is lost or damaged.

Meanwhile, rights can be changed voluntarily.

"If you still decide to change the driver's license, the term of which expires or expired within the specified period, then you have the right to apply to any examination unit of the traffic police with an application for replacement. The issuance of a driver's license to replace the previously issued one is carried out in the usual manner. When applying, you need to present a medical certificate on the absence of contraindications to driving a vehicle of the appropriate category and a passport, "the Autonews portal quotes the text of the application.

"An urgent task is to improve road safety"

Vladimir Putin took part in the expanded meeting of the board of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. He pointed, among other things, to the need to improve road safety. According to the head of state, this is an urgent task for the ministry.

"Over the past ten years, the death rate on the roads has almost halved, and this, of course, is a result, this is a good result. We need to strengthen these positive trends and continue implementing the Road Safety federal project. Particular attention should be paid to the technical equipment of the routes, improving the culture of behavior on the roads, as well as the prevention of child injuries and mortality," Putin said.

In turn, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Vladimir Kolokoltsev noted that over the past year in Russia the number of deaths and injuries in road accidents decreased by 5%.

Recall that in 2018, the President of Russia set a task for the Government of the Russian Federation: by 2024, to reduce road deaths by 3.5 times from the level of 2017. The target will have to be no more than four deaths on the roads per 100,<> people.

In addition, the Strategy for Road Safety in the Russian Federation for 2018-2024 spells out an even more ambitious task: "The goals of the strategy are to improve road safety, as well as the goal of zero deaths in road accidents by 2030."
