Neither the sale nor the use of nitrous oxide is illegal, but by requiring permission from the police for itinerant street sales, the police and the municipality now hope to be able to limit sales.

At present, permits are already required in The City Park and surrounding streets, but are now being expanded further.

"Nitrous oxide is not illegal, but the police have clearly experienced that there have been problems that have been disturbing to nitrous oxide sales," says Rasmus Törnblom (M), vice chairman of the municipal board.

Parties not united

However, not all parties in the municipal government were in favor of an extended ban. The Liberals, the Center Party and the Green Party expressed reservations about the decision.

"Imposing restrictions on such large areas throughout the year is an unwieldy way of dealing with the problem," says Axel Hallberg (MP).

By nine votes to four, however, the city council decided to approve the proposal for an expanded ban. The government hopes that a final decision by the city council will be made so that the restrictions take effect on April 30, 2023.
