Svantesson intends to summon the food giants as soon as possible in the shadow of Statistics Sweden's latest figure that food prices have risen by 22.1 percent over the past year.

"Food is what contributes most to rising inflation. Therefore, I will now call the three major players to have a discussion with them about how we can keep prices down," says Svantesson.

'It's unacceptable'

The food market is dominated by ICA, Axfood and Coop, where ICA is by far the largest.

"My message will be how we can keep prices down, how the price trend can be dampened and have a conversation that none of these companies are taking the opportunity to raise prices at this point.

"It is unacceptable if there are actors who raise prices unnecessarily.

Sweden stands out

A grocery bag in Sweden has increased more in price than they have in the Nordic neighboring countries. The inflation rate in Sweden also stood at 12.0 percent in February, compared with 6.3 percent in Norway and 7.6 percent in Denmark. Despite this, she believes that the government has done everything they could.

"The government contributes economic policy to this by not fuelling inflation. But many parties have to do their part, the Riksbank does its part, we do our part, but companies in their industries have to do their part.

Special debate

The Social Democrats are now calling for a so-called special debate on food prices and household finances in the Riksdag.

"Now there have been new serious inflation figures and not least food prices continue to plague households," says the Social Democrats' economic policy spokesman Mikael Damberg.
