As the war in Ukraine drags on, NATO remains on alert. Last week, it held a military exercise in the Mediterranean in which nine countries participated. United States, Canada, Turkey, Germany, France... Their objective: to prepare for any possible attack - including nuclear - in the area. An exercise that comes in a context that sees the growing presence of Russian submarines on the spot.

It was at an air base in Sicily that the annual military exercise was organized. According to NATO, Russian submarine activities are increasing in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas.

Technical coordinator Lieutenant Maxime sees in this exercise organized under the aegis of NATO a way to be ready to respond to the challenges posed by the presence of submarines in the area. "Some submarines are carriers of nuclear weapons, and can pose a threat to maritime traffic, block straits ... Some submarines may also come and take information about our forces near our coasts."

After simulating an attack, the troops return to base.

While Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said that his country is granting itself the right not to meet its nuclear non-proliferation commitments, tensions are rising a notch.

With this exercise, NATO wants to show that it is preparing for any eventuality.
