While nearly 7,000 tonnes of waste are still piled up on the sidewalks of the capital this Wednesday, Parisians must adapt.

Limiting waste, moving to neighboring streets, calling on private companies... In the 17th arrondissement, residents are looking for new solutions.

We will have to slalom between the trash cans for the 80,000 demonstrators planned in Paris this Wednesday during the eighth day of mobilization against the pension reform.

With more than 7,000 tons of garbage, waste continues to pile up on the sidewalks of the capital.

The garbage collectors' strike has been going on for ten days and the town hall of Paris supports it.

On Tuesday, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin requested the requisition of personnel.

In the meantime, Parisians are adapting and taking matters into their own hands, as in the 17th arrondissement where Europe 1 has gone to meet the inhabitants.

Use private companies

"Here's the garbage room, it's overflowing."

In front of the room, Foucauld holds his nose.

Garbage bags have been piling up for ten days, so, in the building, the inhabitants are organizing themselves.

"We had to double the time to take out the bins. Now, in our purchases, we are careful to take as little packaging as possible, to pack the waste a little as much as possible. No orders, no Amazon, no Deliveroo”, he underlines.

A few meters further on, Edgar went out to scout for a dumpster.

"I have a bag that's already full at home and one that's half full. The one that's full, for now I'm keeping it on the window sill so it doesn't smell too much and I'm going to throw it in the next street", hopes the Parisian.

With the fear of losing their customers because of the smells, the merchants of the district also met at the request of Yann, manager of Café Ponce.

"There are people who, when they left their homes, did not see the street. And seeing no solution coming because the mayor did not have the possibility of bringing in private companies, we took the initiative to take one at our expense and to divide this cost with all the merchants on the street", specifies the manager.

The arrival of the dump truck reserved by the merchants is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

In the meantime, they store their waste in containers whose lids they struggle to close.
