Wu Rongyuan, chairman of Taiwan's Labor Party, accepted an exclusive interview with the Global Times: Now is an important moment for Taiwanese to save themselves

[Global Times reporter Wu Wei] In the development of cross-strait relations and the process of national reunification, the unification faction on the island has always been a political force that cannot be ignored.

Under the suppression of the DPP authorities and foreign forces such as the United States, what is the current situation of the reunification faction?

In response to these issues, the Global Times interviewed Wu Rongyuan, chairman of the Taiwan Labor Party, on March 13.

There are two conditions for peaceful reunification

Global Times: Recently, there has been heated discussion on the island about the US plan to "destroy Taiwan", and the Taiwan reunification faction has also launched a "joint action against McCarthy to disrupt Taiwan".

What do you think of US involvement in cross-strait relations and Taiwan politics?

Wu Rongyuan:

The United States' involvement in the Taiwan issue did not happen overnight. It has been nearly 80 years since 1949.

In the past 80 years, the United States first provided military and political support and economic assistance to Taiwan, and in the 1980s, in order to curb the improvement of relations between the Soviet Union and China, the two sides entered a "peaceful exchange" situation.

However, with the development of the mainland of the motherland, the United States has changed its national strategy to contain China's development, and regards Taiwan as a so-called "strategic base" and pawn.

It can be said that the United States has always regarded safeguarding its own national interests as the core principle of establishing international relations, and can sacrifice everything for its own interests.

Economically, the United States has forced TSMC to move there; politically, it is trying to use Taiwan to fight the so-called "proxy war", taking the opportunity to consume the comprehensive national strength of the motherland, delaying and destroying the process of the mainland's national strategic construction.

We have seen that Taiwan's defense has entered a state of "war preparations". The military service has been extended from four months to one year, and the purchase of American mine-laying systems has turned the entire island of Taiwan into a war zone.

Now another "National Mobilization Law" has been concocted, including high school and youth over the age of 16 as the main social force for wartime mobilization.

In order to cooperate with the United States to contain China, the "Taiwan independence" regime has plunged Taiwan into such a military deployment, even if it sends its own children to the battlefield.

If the United States wants to bring the war to the island itself, it is destroying Taiwan.

Therefore, we believe that the people of Taiwan must have the awareness to save themselves, and now is an important moment for the people of Taiwan to save themselves.

Global Times: Do you think there are conditions for the peaceful reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait?

Wu Rongyuan:

I think peaceful reunification requires two conditions: one is a necessary condition, and the other is a sufficient condition.

The mainland of the motherland already has the comprehensive national strength to contain foreign forces, especially the United States, from interfering with and destroying reunification, which is a necessary condition for the reunification of the motherland.

But for peaceful reunification, there is another very important and sufficient condition, that is, Taiwan compatriots are willing to move towards peaceful reunification.

Regrettably, after decades of distorted historical education, some Taiwan compatriots do not understand the national conditions of the motherland, do not know that Taiwan will eventually return to China, and are still led into the wrong direction by "Taiwan independence" and "independence" in the "new colony" situation the way.

Fortunately, the mainland of the motherland has always insisted on peaceful exchanges, hoping to create conditions conducive to the development of Taiwan's society, enhance Taiwan compatriots' understanding of the mainland, and see if we can create conditions for Taiwan compatriots to be willing to move towards peaceful reunification in time.

I think that with the continuous growth of the mainland's comprehensive national strength and the maintenance of strategic focus, Taiwan compatriots will gradually discover that compared with the United States, which only treats Taiwan as a pawn, and does not hesitate to destroy Taiwan or plunge Taiwan into war disasters, the motherland is after all its own. Compatriots, they only love Taiwan.

We currently have this condition to exchange time for the recognition and support of Taiwanese society.

Global Times: How strong is Taiwan's current support for reunification?

Wu Rongyuan:

It can be said that even if "Taiwan independence" is completely in power, the Taiwanese society dare not openly oppose unification and "independence", because the current legal principle that the Taiwan authorities rely on is that "both sides of the strait belong to one China".

According to objective public opinion surveys, after decades of "de-Sinicization" education, the proportion of people on the island who identify themselves as Chinese is getting lower and lower, and the proportion of those willing to reunify is the lowest. Of course, the proportion of those who support "independence" is also Not very high, most advocate maintaining the confrontational status quo.

Objectively speaking, the unifying power is really a minority in Taiwan.

However, judging from the fact that the United States is holding Taiwan hostage to confront the mainland, and is not hesitating to kill the net, it can be seen that the United States has no other better way to contain China, and the separation and confrontation has come to an end.

As far as cross-strait relations are concerned, unification includes global unification campaigns and partial unification campaigns.

The global unified movement dominated by the mainland decides the local unified movement. No matter how small our power in the island is, but in terms of the overall unified movement, this is the unity of 1.4 billion people, not the unity of a minority of the 23 million people on the island. sports.

It is very difficult for the reunification faction to participate in Taiwan elections

Global Times: Who are the main members of Taiwan's unification faction?

Wu Rongyuan:

Taiwan's political ecology is divided into two parts: the blue camp and the green camp, and the unification groups have different historical origins.

For example, our Workers' Party and the China United Alliance Party belong to the leftists and have deep ties to the mainland of the motherland.

Many Taiwanese compatriots went to the mainland to fight against Japan, and then brought the mainland's new democratic revolutionary ideas back to Taiwan, and joined forces with their predecessors who fought against Japan in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period.

After the Kuomintang government retreated to Taiwan, "martial law" was declared, and many of our seniors were arrested.

After Taiwan "lifted the law" in the 1980s, they came out of prison and regrouped. They have never given up their ideology, and they have always cared about the development of the motherland. They believe that the political movement to promote the reunification of the motherland should be rebuilt on the island.

In 1989, the Taiwan Labor Party was established. We have two major programs: one is nationalism, opposes neo-colonialism, advocates returning to the big family of nations, and opposes external intervention; the other is social reform.

It is not easy for the Labor Party under the guidance of such a unified leftist program to survive in the past 40 years.

Most of our members are participants in various social movements of the working class, as well as people who have national consciousness and identify with traditional Chinese culture.

After the Democratic Progressive Party came to power in 2016, it carried out pension reforms for the military, public and educational institutions on the island. Some pan-blue friends were suppressed. They hoped that cross-strait reunification would improve their living conditions.

That is to say, among the supporters of the Kuomintang, there are many new orthodox factions who advocate unification.

Generally speaking, although those who support reunification are in the minority in Taiwan society, as the cross-strait situation has become more serious and complex, Taiwan society has begun to think seriously and rationally about cross-strait relations, realizing that Taiwan will fall into A catastrophe of deep crisis.

After Pelosi fled to Taiwan in August last year, the People's Liberation Army conducted large-scale military exercises, which can be said to have given Taiwanese people a good education on current affairs. They realized that the mainland has various conditions to solve the Taiwan issue.

Global Times: What actions does the Taiwan reunification faction take to promote reunification?

Wu Rongyuan:

We often hold symposiums on ideas and situations to sort out the common thread of history and culture on both sides of the strait.

For example, last year was the 360th anniversary of Zheng Chenggong's recovery of Taiwan, so we held symposiums and connected activities with the mainland.

Every year, the War of Resistance Against Japan and the Memorial Day of the Revolution of 1911 will also hold activities.

At the same time, he is engaged in various social policy campaigns. For example, every May Day will summarize the situation of Taiwanese laborers, hoping to create better living conditions through peaceful cross-strait exchanges.

However, because we still have too little power and resources in society, it is difficult to exert influence. No matter how good or important the activities are, Taiwan's mainstream media will not mention them.

In order to gain a greater right to speak, we also participate in elections, but Taiwan's elections are "gold power politics". We have participated in elections for decades, and only won three elections in the Hsinchu area, and all of them were elected representatives of public opinion at the local level .

So, why can we gain a place in Hsinchu?

Firstly, we have provided labor services for a long time, and we have accumulated a good reputation among the working people in Hsinchu County. More importantly, the Hsinchu area is a Hakka tribe with a strong awareness of the Central Plains, and it is difficult for "Taiwan independence" to enter.

I think what we can do is to do our best to create the necessary and sufficient conditions for the peaceful reunification.

Unification is not only reasonable, but beneficial

Global Times: The mainland published a white paper on Taiwan last year. How do you understand the mainland's Taiwan policy?

Wu Rongyuan:

Joining hands to move toward peaceful reunification is most in line with the common interests of both sides of the strait. The mainland's solution to the Taiwan issue is not to resolve territorial disputes, but to call Taiwan compatriots to go home. Therefore, we must win the hearts of the people in a calm situation.

The practice of reuniting your family is the core content of the white paper for the new era.

On the other hand, Taiwan compatriots must also clearly understand the situation. Reunification is not only justified, but also beneficial.

First, Taiwan has not returned to China. Once the cross-strait economic and trade relations are in turmoil, Taiwan's economy will shrink very seriously.

Second, the important social condition for the improvement of people's livelihood in Taiwan lies in unification.

After Taiwan's return, how much can the defense budget be saved in a year?

Is it still necessary to use money to maintain the so-called "diplomacy"?

The saved budget can be used to improve people's livelihood.

Now the mainland has the "Chinese dream" of realizing national reunification and national rejuvenation, and our unification faction in Taiwan also has a "Taiwan dream", that is, after reunification, under the shadow of the motherland, we can build the best society in the world in Taiwan welfare system.

Global Times: Can you tell us about the suppression you encountered in the pursuit of cross-strait reunification?

Wu Rongyuan:

It can be said that we can hardly move on the island.

Although the "Taiwan independence" regime dare not directly suppress the people, organizations, and political parties who advocate reunification, they will use public opinion, legal restrictions, and formal siege to prevent voices advocating reunification and the people's movement from being carried out.

At the end of 2019, the DPP authorities passed the "Reverse Infiltration Law" and called the mainland a "hostile foreign force."

Although this bill does not prohibit Taiwan people from communicating with the mainland on the surface, there are various restrictions, and it can also use political containment to attack the forces that support reunification on the island.

However, the biggest suppression is not aimed at me personally or the Labor Party, but the distortion of the entire national history and disregard for traditional Chinese culture. This is the greatest crime of Taiwan separatism to the nation.

However, the "Taiwan nation theory" that this kind of "national nihilism" and "historical nihilism" want to construct cannot be constructed at all. The historical connection between Taiwan and the mainland is undeniable. The Chinese culture inherited by Taiwan is deeply rooted. "Taiwan independence" is doomed. There is no way out.

Global Times: You were once sentenced to death by the Kuomintang Chiang Kai-shek authorities during the "martial law" period because of your political ideas, and then your sentence was commuted and you were granted an amnesty.

What has kept you going until now?

Wu Rongyuan:

I was born after the war. I knew that I was Chinese since I was a child. I learned a relatively complete history of China when I was growing up, and I have a deeper understanding of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

There is a book on the mainland called "Suffering and Splendor", and Taiwan compatriots have not only witnessed the suffering of the nation, but will also witness and participate in the glorious and glorious process of national reunification.
