Nordkalk had requested 2.8 billion in the long-standing conflict concerning a permit for a limestone fence in the Ojnareskogen in northern Gotland.

In the lower instance of the Land and Environmental Court, both Nordkalk and SMA Mineral received permission to quarry in 2014. The following year, however, the legal situation changed following the government's decision to make the Stora Vikers and Bästeträsk areas EU nature reserves, so-called Natura 2000 areas, which means a stronger protection for nature.

In the decision of the Land and Environment High Court, which was announced in September 2018, the court stated that quarrying in the area would lead to the destruction of priority habitats.
