Miranza, a leading group in ophthalmology with more than 30 centers in Spain and Andorra, joins World Glaucoma Week, which is celebrated from March 13 to 18, with an awareness campaign and early detection of the disease.

Known as the "silent disease", this pathology, which affects more than 3% of the Spanish population and is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the world, severely damages the optic nerve and progresses without giving symptoms until it causes loss of vision. vision important.

Prevention is the best option to stop the progression of the disease, whose main risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure.

For this reason, Miranza's prevention campaign focuses on the measurement of intraocular pressure, especially among the population at risk: people over 60 years of age, people with a family history of glaucoma or with high myopia or hyperopia.

Screenings in six communities

The screenings will take place free of charge in six communities, between March 13 and 18.

Some will take place in Miranza's own clinics, while others will take place in places such as urban spaces, shopping centers and sports clubs.

Specifically, the Miranza awareness campaign will take place in Madrid, Barcelona, the Basque Country, Seville, Mallorca and the Canary Islands.

The glaucoma filter

In addition, to raise awareness about the significant loss of vision that the disease entails if it is not diagnosed and treated on time, Miranza's profiles on social networks will be altered with a filter that will simulate the loss of peripheral vision caused by glaucoma.

This filter will be available on Miranza's accounts on social networks so that everyone who wishes can download it and also use it on their profiles, thus helping to raise awareness among the population.

5 key points about glaucoma

  • Glaucoma is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the optic nerve.

  • It is estimated that the prevalence in Spain is between 2% and 3%, although only half of the cases are diagnosed

  • The importance of an early diagnosis lies in the fact that, once the damage is established, it is already irreversible and our effort as ophthalmologists will focus on preventing this damage from progressing.

  • Treatments, all aimed at lowering intraocular pressure, the main risk factor for glaucoma, are increasingly varied and effective in stopping vision loss.

  • You can live with glaucoma, even having lost vision.

Central vision is usually not affected, if action is taken on time and the patient is committed to their chronic treatment and follow-up.
