In the street, in public transport, in nightclubs… Violence against women can take place anywhere.

An application exists to allow women in danger to seek help from other women.

It's called The Sorority.

Europe 1 explains how it works.

The Sorority, the sorority, in other words the solidarity between women, is the name of a new application allowing women to help themselves when they are in danger.

The concept is simple: if you open the application, you will come across a large pink and blue button which will offer you to launch the alert.

"If we press it for two seconds, it sends the alert to the first 50 people around us, who have our geolocation and on average you have ten people who contact you for at least two minutes", explains Priscillia Routier-Trillard, founder and Application Manager.

Get help in all situations

The device makes it possible to receive help in all situations of distress, whether it is street harassment, domestic violence or sexual violence.

“We see all the people around us, the people with pink hair are the people who offer a safe place to flee at any time, for a few hours or a few nights. It is especially in the countryside, in rural areas, that we will think that we are alone, but we are never alone”, she continues.

"It probably saved my life"

This solidarity between women has already helped hundreds of people, like Estelle, a resident of a small village in Isère who was recently attacked in her home.

"A person around me attacked me and hit me. I immediately started the application and within a minute, I had a dozen calls", says Estelle.

"With the application, they knew where I was and were able to go directly to the gendarmerie. They took little time to intervene. It could have gone wrong, it surely saved my life."

More than 53,000 users have already adopted the application.

For the moment, it is reserved for women for security reasons, but should soon be open to men as well.
