In order to establish the rights of LGBT and other sexual minorities, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and others have submitted a bill to the Diet to amend the Civil Code to legalize same-sex marriage.

In response to the dismissal of the Prime Minister's secretary for making discriminatory remarks about same-sex marriage, there have been calls from parties to increase understanding and establish rights for LGBT and other sexual minorities.

The Constitutional Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party submitted a bill to the House of Representatives on the 6th to revise the Civil Code to legalize same-sex marriage in order to respect individual sexual orientation and gender identity and realize marriage equality.

The revised bill amends Article 739 of the Civil Code, which stipulates that marriages must be registered, to state that ``marriage shall become effective when parties of the opposite sex or the same sex submit a notification in accordance with the provisions of the Family Registration Law,'' making same-sex marriage possible. and so on.

A similar revision bill was submitted four years ago by the then three opposition parties, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Communist Party, and the Social Democratic Party, but it was scrapped when the House of Representatives was dissolved.

Masako Okawara, a member of the House of Representatives of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, told reporters, "All over the world, we share the universal value that sexuality is an individual human right that cannot be violated by anyone. G7 Hiroshima Prime Minister Kishida should take the lead in making the summit a place to communicate to the international community that Japan shares these values."
