LONDON -

The former leader of the British Labor Party, Jeremy Corbyn, hardly misses any opportunity to participate in the strikes and labor protests that the country has known for months and is among the largest in British history, so there is still high popularity for Corbyn among workers and youth circles.

On the other hand, Corbyn is considered an undesirable element for some of the right-wing elites, including the new leadership of the Labor Party, which led to opposition leader Keir Starmer's decision to prevent Corbyn from running on behalf of the party in the upcoming elections, a decision that shocked many. Especially since Corbyn has been continuing his political work for more than 40 years.

The ban came after a series of harassment of Corbyn, and an attempt to accuse him of anti-Semitism, due to his great support for the Palestinian cause and his harsh criticism of the policies of the Israeli occupation.

Although Corbyn's opponents failed to produce any evidence of his involvement in anti-Semitism, he faces a real battle aimed at removing him from the political scene forever, after he had been a difficult figure in British politics for years and was close to reaching the position of prime minister in the 2019 elections.

unknown future

In contact with Al-Jazeera Net with Corbin, he refused to disclose the future step that he would take after the decision to prevent him from running on behalf of the workers, stressing that he is currently focused on confronting the crisis of the high cost of living in his country.

On the other hand, sources from the Labor Party suggested - to Al Jazeera Net - that Corbyn might run as an independent during the general elections that will be held at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025.

The same sources confirmed that Corbyn is very popular in his constituency (Islinton) in the capital, London, and he can win a parliamentary seat easily, even if he runs away from the Labor Party.

Profits before the citizen

When asked about the causes of the cost of living crisis in Britain, Corbin confirmed that it is caused by "the economic system that sanctifies and gives priority to providing profits at the expense of citizens," adding that energy companies make profits in the billions that they distribute to their shareholders "in exchange for pushing millions of citizens into poverty."

Corbyn expressed his understanding of the strikes by hundreds of thousands of workers "because they are fighting against the huge disparities and inequalities in society and demanding a fairer society for all."

He stressed that the cost of living crisis will not be resolved "as long as private companies do what they want without calculation, and control the way we consume resources in order to live."

The British politician proposes a solution to deal with these companies by "making all basic resources such as energy, water, post and railways under democratic public management, and not remaining monopolized by the minority," expressing his conviction that this is the best way "for the transfer of wealth and economic power from the hands of those those who control it to whoever needs it.”

blow to democracy

Although Corbyn refused to talk about his political future after the decision to prevent him from running on behalf of the Labor Party, he affirmed his adherence to his position, which he expressed in the statement he issued immediately after the decision was issued.

In this statement, he said that Starmer's decision is an explicit blow to democracy, as well as a violation of the rights of the residents of the Islinton region to choose representatives of the Labor Party, stressing that the residents have the right to choose their candidates and not the party's leadership, adding that any violation of this path provided for by the party's laws must To be confronted by anyone who believes in democracy.

In the same statement, Corinne considered that the decision to prevent him from running is a distraction from the primary and most important goal, which is the defeat of the Conservative Party during the upcoming elections, stressing that this government is causing one of the worst living crises that Britain has known in generations.

The internal laws of the Labor Party and British laws stipulate that the members of the party in each region are the ones who vote to choose their candidates, and if Corbyn wins the support of the residents of the region, the party will have to accept his candidacy, otherwise the leadership will have to stop the candidacy, and here it may find itself in embarrassment and confrontation with its bases In that region, however, the most likely scenario remains Corbyn's choice to run independently.
