After a round of consultation on a new EU provision concerning eel management, HaV now decides that all eel fishing in the sea will be stopped between the first of October this year and the end of March next year.

A large part of the eels that migrate out of the Baltic Sea area to spawn, migrate precisely through the Öresund.

The eel then gets better conditions to continue its journey.

The decision is based on an overall assessment of a range of ecological, economic and social factors, the Norwegian Maritime and Water Authority announces in a press release.

HaV has primarily taken into account that the eel that migrates out through the Öresund must be given the conditions to contribute to reproduction, as well as that limited fishing can continue.

- The choice of period means that the catches of white eel in the Öresund almost cease.

This means that the white eel that migrates from the Baltic Sea through the Öresund is protected, says Inger Dahlgren, head of HaV's fisheries regulation unit.
