The Gironde Assize Court on Monday sentenced a 71-year-old ex-radiologist to 17 years' imprisonment for rape and sexual assault committed on eight women during consultations.

A sentence greater than the requisitions of the prosecutor who denounced the methods of the practitioner as being a "system" and a "way of life".

A septuagenarian ex-radiologist was sentenced Monday in Bordeaux to 17 years' imprisonment for rape and sexual assault on patients whom he denied en bloc before the Assize Court, we learned from two lawyers .

The public prosecutor had demanded Friday, 15 years of imprisonment against him, for facts that this practitioner of Langon, in Gironde, had set up in “system” and in “way of life”, according to the accusation.

Facts committed on former patients and a medical secretary

Bassam el Absi, 71, removed from the College of Physicians in 2019 and now retired, was accused by eight women, former patients but also a medical secretary and a young girl aged 15 at the material time.

At the hearing, the victims described specific facts, touching at the level of the private parts or digital penetrations.

The septuagenarian firmly contested everything.

He explained his way of working, supporting gestures, refuted the acts he would have committed and invoked medical reasons to deny having had an erection in contact with certain women.

The Gironde Assize Court also sentenced him to a five-year socio-judicial follow-up.
