• 'Case Mediator' The Canarian plot of extortion of ranchers on three sides: politics, family and Civil Guard

  • Justice Freedom with charges for the former Canarian socialist deputy Juan Bernardo Fuentes

The alleged extortion plot against cattle ranchers from the Canary Islands splashes the PSOE in one of the autonomous fiefdoms that it aspires to preserve after the May 28 elections.

Two of those investigated in this case have been part of the regional government of

Ángel Víctor Torres

in this legislature and one of them,

Juan Bernardo Fuentes Curbelo

, has also been a deputy for Las Palmas in Congress until he was forced to resign on the 14th of February.

At the Ferraz headquarters, they trust that the political firewall they have deployed will prevent the spread of the fire: apart from requiring the parliamentarian to provide his minutes "the same day that the news appeared in the media" -which was how they say they found out about it. the same-, both were provisionally suspended from party membership immediately and a disciplinary file has been opened against them.

According to the investigation of the so-called

Mediator case

, Fuentes Curbelo would have used his status as a deputy and even the facilities of the Congress itself to interact with the Canarian businessmen who allegedly demanded bribes in exchange for subsidies, direct awards or to avoid any sanction.

After his arrest this Monday, he has been released on charges accused of the crimes of bribery, falsehood, money laundering, influence peddling and belonging to an organized group.

The former socialist parliamentarian remained out of the media spotlight on national politics, although at the time of his dismissal he was a member of three commissions with economic weight: Finance and Public Function, Industry, Tourism and Commerce and Relations with the Court of Accounts of the low camera.

He had also participated in the preparation of the presentation of the draft Law on Measures to Prevent and Fight Tax Fraud.

Previously, he had been General Director of Livestock of the Government of the Canary Islands, a position he left in January 2020 to join Congress and in which he was replaced by his nephew, Taishet Fuentes Gutiérrez, another

of

those involved in the alleged corrupt network.

In his case, he had been removed from this public position in June of last year due to "lack of trust", an expression to which Ángel Víctor Torres' team now refer when asked if they already had indications of the irregularities that were they charge him now.

"The PSOE is exemplary in making decisions when an alleged case like the one that occurred is known," they defend in the national leadership of the party, where they divert the focus towards Calle Génova.

"We are especially concerned that the PP, after everything we have seen in the last decade in that formation related to corruption, and whose trials are still ongoing and pending, does not act in the same way," they add, giving as an example the mayoress of Marbella,

Ángeles Muñoz

, whom the Senate is going to investigate for the increase of 12 million euros in her public assets in three years and who has already been confirmed as a candidate for re-election in the May elections.

The

popular

, in turn, have requested the appearance in the Upper House of the First Vice President of the Government, Nadia Calviño, to give explanations about the award of four contracts from the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP). to one of the companies investigated in the

Mediator case

for a value of 2.3 million euros.

Specifically, this money was allocated to material for the training missions directed by the retired Civil Guard division general

Francisco Espinosa Navas

, another of those involved in the plot, reports Efe.

electoral replicas

The surveys carried out in recent months by Sigma Dos for EL MUNDO predicted that Ángel Víctor Torres was the only socialist president along with the Valencian Ximo Puig who would obtain more votes in the next elections compared to 2019. However, his options to opt for a second term were already in danger at the time of the poll -last January- due to the drop in support of two of the three partners who currently support him in the Government.

The possible replicas that the Mediator case

could have in the appointment with the polls three months from

now are now incorporated into this electoral panorama .

Even so, in the PSOE of the Canary Islands they affirm that "neither the leadership nor the honor" of the regional president nor of the candidate for Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the still Minister of Health Carolina Darias, "have been absolutely questioned by no one".

What has not yet been confirmed is the probable replacement of Fuentes Gutiérrez as a candidate for Mayor of the municipality of Antigua, in Fuerteventura.

In the party they point out that the decision of a new candidate for councilor corresponds first to the Local Assembly, then to the island leadership and ultimately to the regional and federal executives.
