The death toll in Turkey and Syria as a result of the earthquakes that occurred on the sixth of February exceeded 50,000, after Turkey announced the death of more than 44,000, in the latest announced toll.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said that the death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey rose to 44,218, in the states of Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adi Yaman, Osmaniye, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya and Elazig.

With the addition of the latest announced number in Syria, which is 5,914 dead, the total death toll in the two countries has risen to more than 50,000.

And "AFAD" indicated - in a statement issued - that 9 thousand and 136 aftershocks were recorded after the earthquake, whose epicenter was in the state of Kahramanmaraş.

"Mountains of rubble"

It also confirmed that the number of people who were evacuated from the affected areas reached 528,146 people.

According to the United Nations, the earthquake disaster was not only the worst in Turkey's history in terms of the death toll, but also in terms of the amount of debris.

UNDP Turkey Representative Louisa Fenton said the mountains of rubble were "unprecedented".

The United Nations also assumes that 8.8 million people will be affected in Syria due to the earthquake and its repercussions.

On the sixth of February, a double earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, the first measuring 7.7 degrees and the second 7.6 degrees, followed by thousands of violent aftershocks.

Which claimed tens of thousands of lives, most of them in southern Turkey, in addition to massive destruction.
