• Corruption The judge releases former Canarian socialist deputy Juan Bernardo Fuentes, who used Congress to receive bribes, freed with charges

  • 'Case Mediator' The Canarian plot of extortion of ranchers on three sides: politics, family and Civil Guard

“Everything is ready and closed.

At nine in the [restaurant] Ramses.

Table for 15 people.

Only people from the Socialist Party.

Those of VOX or Podemos or dragged Catalans cannot enter ».

This is one of the telephone messages that Juan Bernardo Fuentes Curbelo, a socialist deputy in Congress until last week, received from a businessman who would have participated in an alleged "criminal organization" that charged other business owners bribes in exchange for being favored by the Canarian autonomous administration.

The main parties involved in the plot, among which there is a retired general of the Civil Guard - he is the only one who is in prison - demanded a "toll" of 5,000 euros from businessmen interested in receiving favorable treatment.

Then, they organized visits to the Congress of Deputies and the headquarters of the Civil Guard in Madrid to appear

"serious"

before them.

According to the documentation to which EL MUNDO has had access, those days in the Spanish capital used to end in

"big parties"

with prostitutes in clubs and hotels, with an average cost of about 3,000 euros.

Sources from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands reported yesterday that Juan Bernardo Fuentes Curbelo testified this Wednesday before the chief magistrate of the Investigating Court number 4 of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who directs the proceedings.

Police arrested him last Monday.

The judge decided to release him with charges.

He is being investigated for the alleged commission of the crimes of

bribery, falsehood, money laundering, influence peddling and belonging to an organized group.

During the hearing held yesterday, the Prosecutor's Office did not request imprisonment for Juan Bernardo Fuentes.

He ruled out the existence of a flight risk and considered that the former deputy cannot destroy evidence either.

However, the investigating judge indicated in her order that, despite releasing him, this risk

"Does exist (...) given his position on the islands and this environment since 1994, his different political positions and the wide relationships of him

. "

In the magistrate's opinion, the imprisonment of the socialist leader was advised since

the investigation could be “frustrated”.

'Tito Berni' (in the center), together with the mediator of the plot, Marco Antonio NT (right) and another businessman. EL MUNDO

In the proceedings of the case it is explained that Juan Bernardo Fuentes, who left his seat in Congress on February 14, is known as

Tito Berni

.

Precisely, a nephew of his, Taishet Fuentes, is also among those investigated.

He was his successor at the head of the General Directorate of Livestock of the Canary Islands Government.

He is one of the main parties involved, since it is being investigated whether he could have committed fraud when granting subsidies to certain businessmen who would have paid said "toll".

Police investigators point out in their reports that the Canarian businessman

Marcos Antonio NT

was the person who sent Juan Bernardo Fuentes the message in which he talks about organizing a dinner in a Madrid restaurant "only for people" from the PSOE.

They maintain that Marco Antonio NT acted as a

"mediator"

between the former Socialist deputy and "two types of businessmen: the peninsulars interested in expanding their business in the Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC), and the island cheese makers and farmers pending receiving subsidies, inspections or sanctions”.

Tito Berni

and his nephew, the documentation indicates, "from their significant political position

would have sufficient capacity

to make businessmen believe that their aspirations would come true."

The parties in Madrid, according to the investigation carried out by the National Police and the Civil Guard, were attended by the retired general Francisco Espinosa Navas, alias

Papá

.

This uniformed man, who came to be in charge of the Algeciras (Cádiz) and Gran Canaria headquarters, would have taken advantage of the enormous network of contacts that he accumulated during his years in the Benemérita to exert pressure on the businessmen harmed in this plot.

This general, born in Guillena (Seville),

has his bank accounts and his real estate assets investigated.
