Today
, Thursday February 23,
Madrid
and 29 other provinces are on
alert for snow
.
The arrival of a
cold maritime polar air mass
, icy and humid, will favor this Thursday in the Community of Madrid
snowfall at very low levels, 600-700 meters
, with accumulations of 5 centimeters of snow above 1000-1200 meters and a freezing environment with values that may drop to zero degrees.
The instability will place some thirty provinces of eleven autonomous communities at
significant risk
(orange warning) and risk (yellow warning), according to the
State Meteorological Agency
(
AEMET
), which forecasts that temperatures
will drop
significantly in the northern half.
Specifically, the
orange warning
will affect Zaragoza, Cantabria, Burgos, Palencia, Valladolid, Soria, Navarra and Álava, where six centimeters of snow will accumulate in 24 hours, while in Huesca and Lleida up
to 20 centimeters of snow may accumulate.
.
The
yellow warning
for snow will be activated in Teruel, Asturias, Valladolid, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Barcelona, Gerona, Lugo, Orense, Madrid, Guipúzcoa, Vizcaya and La Rioja, where the
accumulation will range between 5 and 10 centimeters in 24 hours
.
Also during this day
the cold will predominate
, especially in the final hours of the day, so Teruel, Zaragoza, Asturias, Cantabria, Barcelona, Gerona, Lleida, Toledo and Navarra will be on yellow warning for temperatures of
-6ºC
.
In this sense, Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Zamora, Guadalajara, La Rioja and Huesca will be on
important notice due to cold when it reaches -10ºC
.
In general, the AEMET foresees an
increase in instability
, with cloudy or overcast skies in the northern half of the peninsula and with rains and showers, which may be locally strong or persistent, and with some storms in the Cantabrian area and the western half of the Pyrenees.
