On Tuesday, a soldier died at K 4 in an avalanche on the southern slope of Kebnekaise in connection with a military exercise.

The man was taken to Norway by helicopter for treatment, but his life could not be saved.

The avalanche forecasts for Kebnekaisefjällen, which are produced by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, do not begin until March 2, but the County Administrative Board now chooses to issue a warning.

The entire mountain range

The snowfall in the last week in connection with the mild week before that is what has led to the risk of laceration being so high.

The layer of ice under the fresh snow may simply mean that the masses are not holding.

"In the Kvikkjokksfjällen we also see several signs of laceration and there are the same conditions north of Torneträsk with an ice layer under the new snow," says Martin Jonsson at the County Administrative Board in Norrbotten.
