The Group of Seven countries on Saturday condemned North Korea's "irresponsible behavior" after it launched an intercontinental ballistic missile off the western coast of Japan, and called on Russia to immediately and unconditionally withdraw from Ukraine.

On the sidelines of the security conference in Munich, Germany, the foreign ministers of these countries said in a joint statement that "North Korea's irresponsible behavior calls for a unified response from the international community, including important new measures taken by the UN Security Council."

The missile fired by Pyongyang on Saturday was the first in seven weeks and comes as Washington and Seoul prepare to hold joint military exercises.

Tokyo suggested that the missile landed in its exclusive economic zone.

North Korea fired an unprecedented number of missiles last year, including intercontinental ballistic missiles that can hit any location in the United States, and has resumed preparations for its first nuclear test since 2017.

The South Korean military said today's long-range missile was launched from the Sunan region near Pyongyang.

Sunan is home to Pyongyang International Airport, where North Korea conducted most of its

recent ICBM tests.

The G7 countries - which include the United States, Germany, Japan, France, Italy, Britain and Canada - confirmed that they "condemn (what happened) with the greatest firmness."

The ministers added that "this act constitutes a flagrant violation of UN Security Council resolutions and threatens regional and international peace and security."

The Group of Seven, chaired by Japan this year, called on "North Korea to fully fulfill all its obligations stemming from the relevant UN Security Council resolutions."
