The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced today, Saturday, that the death toll from the earthquake in Turkey has risen to 40,642.

And Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu announced yesterday evening, Friday, that the death toll from the Kahramanmaraş earthquake in Turkey amounted to 39,672, before the emergency department announced its rise again today.

In a related context, the head of the disaster and emergency management said that it is likely to end the search for survivors tomorrow, Sunday.

Today, Saturday, rescue teams announced the rescue of a number of people from under the rubble in southern Turkey, 13 days after the earthquake.

Search and rescue operations are still continuing in a number of areas, while their end has been announced in other places.

While relief efforts continue in the areas affected by the double earthquake in southern Turkey, Turkish Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdag announced that 255 contractors are under investigation for building violations in those areas, stressing that the violators will be held accountable.

At dawn on February 6, an earthquake of 7.7 degrees struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed hours later by another with a magnitude of 7.6 and hundreds of violent aftershocks, which left great losses in lives and property in both countries.
