From February 13th to 15th, Jiangxi carried out an ex situ protection operation for the Yangtze finless porpoise in Poyang Lake, and successfully fished two Yangtze finless porpoises safely from the waters of Songmen Mountain in Poyang Lake, and moved them to the temporary breeding base in the north and south ports of Hukou.

The ex situ protection of the Yangtze finless porpoise is the fifth relocation of the Yangtze finless porpoise in Poyang Lake. It is planned to safely catch 8 Yangtze finless porpoises and move them to Hubei, Anhui and Jiangxi Hukou for exchange of germplasm resources and to promote the development of the Yangtze River Basin. There is optimization of ex situ population structure and rich genetic diversity.

Liu Kai, a researcher at the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences: Try to choose adults, but considering that the pregnancy rate of female finless porpoises in Poyang Lake is still relatively high, the choice may be relatively small.

Some finless porpoise subadults will be selected, these individuals are about three years old.

A total of 21 Yangtze finless porpoises were caught. After physical examination and screening, two Yangtze finless porpoises, both male and about 5 years old, were selected for ex situ protection; the remaining 19 Yangtze finless porpoises were immediately released to Songmen Mountain in Poyang Lake In the water area, the remaining Yangtze finless porpoise ex situ protection target will be completed within this year.
