The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Authority (AFAD) said that an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Thursday evening in the southern province of Hatay.

Prior to the announcement issued by the Turkish Disaster Authority, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center estimated the strength of the tremor in southern Turkey at 4.7 degrees on the Richter scale.

For its part, the Civil Defense in northwestern Syria reported that a new earthquake had been felt by the residents of the region.

The National Center for Earthquakes in Syria estimated the strength of this tremor at 5.4 degrees on the Richter scale, while the Syrian News Agency reported that the people of Damascus, Aleppo, Latakia and other provinces felt this new aftershock.

Turkish and Syrian sources did not indicate any damage or casualties.

The new tremor comes among the thousands of aftershocks that followed the double earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northwestern Syria at dawn on February 6.

According to an indefinite toll, the earthquake left more than 36,000 dead in Turkey and about 6,000 dead across Syria.
