• Spain Trans Law divides Scotland after a rapist changed sex in prison

Nicola Sturgeon

will step down as Scotland's first minister after more than eight years in office, BBC reports

The Scottish National Party leader is scheduled to make her announcement later in the day at a press conference in Edinburgh.

The independence leader had lost popularity after the controversy that arose as a result of her transgender law.

In fact, according to a survey from just a few days ago, collected by 'The Sunday Times', 42% of the electorate believed that Sturgeon should resign.

The controversial Scottish law reduces

the minimum age to request legal recognition of a gender change to

16 years - compared to 18 in the UK - and does not require a prior medical diagnosis of dysphoria, among other things.

The bill had been passed by the Scottish Parliament but, in an unprecedented move, was blocked by the British government.

The future of the norm will be decided by the Court, which has already agreed with London in a similar lawsuit over the calling of a second independence referendum.
