• Politics Feijóo tries to calm the PP on abortion: "It is not a fundamental right, but there is a health right"

  • Health X-ray of abortion: 1% of women, 84% in private centers, 65% Spanish and Castilla y León below average

Abortion "is a woman's right in accordance with the law, and only within the law," but "it is not a fundamental right."

Alberto Núñez Feijóo wanted to establish in this way - confirming point by point what was announced by EL MUNDO - the "update" of the PP's position on abortion, after the internal debate that had arisen due to the disparity of opinions between the different currents of thought in the populars'.

In his explanation, Feijóo has clearly distinguished between two concepts: he does not believe that abortion is a fundamental right, intrinsic to every woman in all circumstances, but he does believe that it is a health right, with normative dimensions such as deadlines.

"Abortion should only be adopted in accordance with the legislation. I do not consider it a fundamental right, and it can be produced according to the legal criteria of each country. It is not included in the Human Rights Convention," he explained in a conference after a visit to a center of the Ronald McDonald Children's Foundation, on the occasion of International Childhood Cancer Day.

It must be remembered that the last ideological presentation of the PP, from 2017, ensures that abortion is not "a right", with which sources from Genoa now assure that it must be modified.

It would be added that it is not a "fundamental" right.

This change will be made after the general elections, although the new position will enter the 'popular' program for the general elections.

Feijóo does not understand the debate that has been generated by his step forward regarding abortion, and recalls that Mariano Rajoy, although he appealed the José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero law on deadlines, later did not change it from the Government.

"Of the 27 countries of the EU, in 23 there is regulation of abortion. It has been in force for 13 years. Neither PP nor PSOE have changed it," he said.

The PP believes that the deadline system, to be able to abort up to 14 weeks, "is part of the majority consensus" in Spanish society.

"We do not agree on the abortion of minors without parental consent, on how conscientious objection is regulated and on the minimum period of reflection", he has limited, but we do agree on the main part of the legislation.

"We are going to absolutely support all women and we are not going to coerce those who want to have an abortion in accordance with the legislation," Feijóo wanted to settle.

"Ethical, moral, philosophical issues come together in the voluntary interruption of pregnancy... it would be good to seek consensus, because it is necessary to regulate abortion and support all women who want to be mothers, of course. It is compatible and necessary", he has stopped .

Later, Feijóo has accused Vox and the PSOE of "politicizing" the matter.

"There are parties that live on dissent," he said when asked about the non-legal proposal that Vox has brought to Congress so that abortion is censored as much as possible.

"I understand that there is so much interest in diverting the problems we have, but sometimes it borders on the comic," Feijóo has criticized the controversy -in general terms-.
