This weekend, the Center Party put forward the proposal to legalize cannabis in Malmö, something Sydsvenskan was the first to report on.

Through a pilot project, they want to try to allow the sale and use of the drug at the municipal level, in order to cut off an important source of income for the criminal gangs.

- Our hope is that you get a changed drug policy, which actually ensures that you help those who are addicts and that you take away the income from the gangs in Malmö, says Anton Sauer, group leader and municipal board member for the Center Party in Malmö.

A: “Unrealistic proposal”

The Social Democrats, who govern the municipality, are, however, very critical of the idea.

Joakim Sandell, the party's chairman in Malmö, describes the proposal as unreasonable, and believes that there should be the same rules throughout the country when it comes to drugs.

- It would have been a completely absurd situation to let a drug be legal in Malmö, but illegal in all other cities, says Joakim Sandell.

The proposal has also been raised at the Center Party's meetings at national level, where it has not yet passed.

Anton Sauer believes that he will continue to push the issue, and work to make the project a reality.
