A first rival officially declares herself

against Donald Trump

in the race for the Republican nomination for the American presidential election of 2024. The former governor of South Carolina made her statement on Tuesday in a video posted on her social networks, reports our United States correspondent,

David Thomson.

With archival footage showing her raising her hand at the UN Security Council against a backdrop of Hollywood music, Nikki Haley showed her determination in the face of the male leaders of the planet: "I have never supported bullies

and when I is a woman in heels who answers them, it hurts them even more

”.

daughter of immigrants

In this video, the former US Ambassador to the UN under Donald Trump introduced herself to Americans and shared her personal story as a daughter of Indian Sikh immigrants raised in Bamberg, a small town in 3,000 inhabitants marked by racism or whites and blacks live in neighborhoods separated by a railway line.

Get excited!

Time for a new generation.

An origin of which she says she is proud, insisting on the fact that despite discrimination, her parents "

never fell into resentment and hatred

".

Nikki Haley has always pleaded with Republicans to do more to reach out to minority voters.

In 2015, the governor marked the spirits by signing a law ordering the removal of the Confederate flag, considered a symbol of slavery, from the seat of Parliament in South Carolina.

I was different,

" says the former governor of this state.

“

But my parents always reminded me how lucky we were to live in America, a land of opportunity

 ,” she boasts.

“

Its values, the Republican Party, which has lost the popular vote seven times, must find them

,” she argues.

And to add: “

We need a new generation of leaders

 ”.

Not the only face of Trump

For this election, she is therefore facing her former boss, Donald Trump, whom she supported for a long time before distancing herself from him.

But his different postures make his political positioning difficult.

Considered too anti-Trump for some or too Trumpist for others, currently Nikki Haley is far behind the polls.

And she may not be the only one who wants to oppose the former tenant of the White House.

His former vice-president Mike Pence, his ex-head of diplomacy Mike Pompeo, the governor of Virginia, Glenn Youngkin… Many Republicans are considering a possible announcement soon.

For Nikki Haley, the threat could even come directly from her state: South Carolina senator Tim Scott is also very openly flirting with a candidacy.

However, on the Republican side, the spotlight is mainly on Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida and rising star of the party.

For now, he has not officially entered the race either.
