“About 98% of the buildings that collapsed as a result of earthquakes were built before 1999,” RIA Novosti quotes Erdogan as saying at a briefing at the Center for Disaster Management (AFAD) in Ankara.

He confirmed the information of the Ministry of Urban Development that less than 41,000 buildings in ten earthquake-affected provinces of Turkey are destroyed or in disrepair and must be urgently demolished.

Earlier, Erdogan said that the death toll from earthquakes in Turkey has reached 35,418.

RIA Novosti notes that the earthquake on February 6 in terms of the number of victims became the most destructive natural disaster in the history of Turkey, surpassing the 1939 earthquake.
