The object was shot down over Lake Huron which is between Michigan and Ontario.
On Twitter, Elissa Slotkin, congresswoman for the Democrats in Michigan, writes that it was well done by those who carried out the shooting.
"We are all interested in what this object was and what purpose it had," she writes.
Canada is closing the airspace near Tobermory in Ontario on Sunday evening for an air defense operation, Reuters reports.
Earlier in the evening, airspace over Lake Michigan was closed, but reopened shortly thereafter.
