In an appeal titled “The EU is forcing us to use insects for food,” Beignet recalled that the European Commission recently issued the necessary permits for the use of brownie crickets in food products in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 – initially in the form of defatted flour.

"For what?

In the name of saving the planet and reducing meat consumption, as well as in order to end world hunger,” the MP explained.

According to her, at present, the propaganda of the idea associated with eating insects continues to gain momentum.

This happens despite a number of negative consequences for human health from the use of such products.

So, among the most well-known negative effects, the parliamentarian included allergies, depression, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, the risk of infection with intestinal parasites, and so on.

“In the light of the above, is the European Commission aware of the risk to the health of EU citizens?”

Benyo asked EK.

However, she asked what measures the EC intends to take to significantly reduce food waste.

Currently, according to the politician, about a third of all food produced is simply not eaten.

At the end of January, it became known that the EU continued to expand the list of insects suitable for human consumption in the territory of the association.

In 2023, house crickets were added to the corresponding list.

Now in the European Union they can be used in food in powder form and in other dried forms.

This, according to European functionaries, will also make a positive contribution to environmental protection.

Recall that earlier the EU allowed the sale as a food ingredient of the larvae of a large flour worm (hruschak) and Asian locust.
