The case against Byalyatsky and a number of other representatives of the Viasna human rights center, which is not registered in Belarus, was initiated under the articles “smuggling” and “organization and preparation of actions grossly violating public order, or active participation in them.”

“I ask you to find guilty ... and, based on the totality of crimes, determine the punishment for Belyatsky in the form of imprisonment for 12 years,” RIA Novosti quotes the state prosecutor.

For the other three defendants in the case, he requested terms ranging from nine to 11 years.

He also asked to impose a fine of 5,000 basic units (about $67,800) on each person involved in state revenue.

Earlier, the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus announced that it had filed a case against representatives of Viasna, including Byalyatsky, to court.
