On Monday evening around 10:40 p.m., several callers alerted the police that loud bangs had been heard outside an apartment building in Åkers Styckebruk, a small town near the town of Strängnäs in Södermanland.

- Those who called in understood that the firecrackers sounded like gunfire, says Tobias Sundström, commanding officer at police region East.

People in the apartment

When the police arrived at the scene, they began to secure traces around the house where the explosions are said to have taken place.

- There are traces that indicate that there may have been gunfire from outside at the apartment, says Tobias Sundström.

There were people in the apartment, but no one is said to have been physically injured.

No connection

The police have patrols on site, have set up roadblocks and started questioning witnesses as well as a technical investigation.

- At present, there is nothing to indicate any connection with criminal networks or organized crime.

But we'll see what we come up with during the night, says Tobias Sundström.

The police have opened a preliminary investigation into attempted murder and serious weapons offences.
