Shoigu stressed that this testifies "to the barbaric nature of the Ukrainian leadership."
Earlier, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' called for a Christmas truce so that Orthodox people could attend church services.
Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed Shoigu to introduce a ceasefire along the entire line of contact in Ukraine from 12:00 on January 6 to 24:00 on January 7.
The Ministry of Defense subsequently reported that, in accordance with the instructions of the President, the troops were ordered to cease fire along the entire line of contact between the parties in Ukraine for 36 hours.
At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry noted that the Ukrainian military continued shelling settlements and positions of the Russian Armed Forces after the introduction of a ceasefire by Moscow.
