From being almost completely extinct, the otter has recovered and started appearing in more and more places in Sweden, but in Västmanland it has been a little slower than elsewhere, says Johanna Arrendal, who has researched otters.

- No one knows why, it has not been investigated, but it may have to do with the few individuals that remained in the 1980s living far from here, it may also be about environmental toxins or other parameters that have meant that there is not as much food for the otter.

The last inventory of otters in Västmanland was made in 2005 and according to Johanna Arrendal, no one has counted the number of otters.

- But there are probably several thousand in Sweden today, says Johanna Arrendal.
