A humanitarian catastrophe and widespread destruction caused by the Marash earthquake, which struck at dawn today, Monday, in southern Turkey and northern Syria, leaving hundreds dead and thousands injured, in addition to destroying entire neighborhoods in both countries.

The clips - which were circulated by activists and Turkish and Syrian media on the communication sites - show demolished buildings and wrecked cars in a number of Turkish states and in regions of northern Syria as a result of the earthquake, as well as rescue operations in search of survivors still stuck under the rubble.

Hundreds of people were killed and injured in Syria and Turkey as a result of the earthquake. For its part, the Turkish authorities raised the alert status to the fourth level, a level that includes the request for international assistance.

The Turkish Emergency and Disaster Management said that an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the Pazardik district of Kahramanmaraş (southern Turkey) at a depth of 7 km at dawn today, while the American Institute of Seismology reported that the main tremor was 7.8 degrees.

According to Agence France-Presse, this earthquake is the largest in Turkey since the August 1999 earthquake, which killed 17,000 people, including 1,000 in Istanbul.

In Syria, the earthquake struck the governorates of Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia and Hama, killing more than 800 people and injuring thousands.

The earthquake was also felt by residents in Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Greece, Cyprus, Armenia, Georgia, Iraq, and some areas in Egypt.

Live scenes - by the Turkish "A haber" channel - showed the collapse of residential buildings due to a new earthquake in Malatya, eastern Turkey, which forced the rescue teams and the channel's team to flee from one of the city's streets.

Syrian distress call

Syrian families launched distress calls to rescue their relatives from under the rubble of buildings that were destroyed as a result of the earthquake in the north of the country that struck southern Turkey, causing great human and material losses.

The Syrian Civil Defense said that hundreds of families are still under the rubble, amid great difficulties facing rescue operations due to the lack of heavy equipment.

A Turkish young man posted a video clip on his Instagram account, asking for his help to save him and his mother from under the rubble after the earthquake.

"If anyone can hear me," he said, giving his home address, adding: "I am under the rubble with my mother. We are fine now. Here the place is full of water. Kindly help us."
