China News Service, February 6 (CNN) reported that on the 6th local time, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southern Turkey, killing more than 500 people and injuring nearly 3,000 in Turkey and Syria.

  At least 284 people were killed and more than 2,300 were injured in Turkey, according to Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.

More than 1,700 buildings were damaged in 10 Turkish cities.

On February 6, local time, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Gaziantep, Turkey, and buildings were damaged.

  According to Syrian state television, citing sources from the Syrian Ministry of Health, the strong earthquake affected Syria, killing at least 237 people and injuring 639.

  The combined death toll in Turkey and Syria now stands at at least 521, reports said.

  In the early morning of the 6th, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks occurred in Turkey, and many countries in the region felt the earthquake strongly.

CNN cited data from the US Geological Survey as saying the quake was one of the strongest to hit Turkey in the past 100 years.
