Four of the victims died in two vehicles in the province of Biobío, about 560 kilometers south of the capital Santiago, according to Interior Minister Carolina Tohá.

- In one case they were burned because they were hit by the fire, she said earlier on Friday.

The other vehicle was involved in a fatal crash, possibly trying to escape the fire, according to Tohá.

Several firefighters and rescue workers have also died while fighting the fire, which is raging in over 14,000 hectares of forest.

Only 65 out of 151 forest fires have been judged to be under control.

On the night of Saturday, the national crisis authority states that a total of 13 people died in connection with the fires.

Most of the forest fires are raging in the provinces of Biobío and neighboring Ñuble, where the government has declared a state of emergency for better coordination with the military.

The heat wave that has hit the country is expected to continue with high temperatures and strong winds that can make extinguishing work more difficult.

It is unclear how many homes were destroyed in the fires.

- The state's full strength will be deployed to, first and foremost, fight the fires and help all those affected, says Chilean President Gabriel Boric.
