  Lila, 53, graduated from law at the Federal University of Alagoas and is a businessman and lawyer.

He has been a member of the Progressive Party of Alagoas since 1999.

  In a speech after the election results were announced, Paseco said Brazil "needs to root out toxic polarization" and promised that the Jan. 8 violence that stormed state power in the capital Brasilia would "never be repeated again."

In a speech after winning re-election, Lira also pledged to "continue to defend democracy".

  That night, Brazilian President Lula congratulated Pacheco and Lila on their successful re-election as Speaker of the Senate and House of Representatives.
